A Bit of History
Gloucester stands on the site of a Roman fortress dating from AD60. By AD 97 it had been made a Colonia, (a self-governing city with similar rights to Rome itself).
The New County started its life as ‘The Old Ram’ back in 1879 as a commercial and posting hotel. The first documented landlady was Mrs Elizabeth Drewitt until 1885. The Ram was the first commercial premises in the city to have a telephone! The Ram closed in 1936 and after extensive refurbishment re-opened as The New County which boasts of 39 fully en-suite rooms.
